Guest Speaker Program

Carthage’s education department sponsors an annual guest speaker event each May in celebration of Teacher Appreciation Month. Speakers come from a variety of disciplines, and speak to the core aims of teaching and learning in the current climate. Guest speakers have included such names as acclaimed author and educator Gloria Ladson-Billings and Dr. Gholdy Muhhamed.

Community Literacy Center

In Fall 2024, Carthage launched the Community Literacy Center. This center is housed at the Kenosha Emerging Leaders Academy (KELA) in Kenosha’s Uptown Neighborhood. KELA is a partnership between Carthage College, the City of Kenosha, and several other community organizations; it’s goal is to provide students and young adults with the skills and resources to pursue college and/or career paths. The Community Literacy Center is the passion project of Dr. Jackie Easley, professor of education. Students in Dr. Easley’s classes engage with the center and help provide programming.
